Description:
In this Psychological Humanities and Ethics presentation, Mark Freeman will share select passages from his new book Do I Look at You with Love? Reimagining the Story of Dementia (Brill | Sense, 2021) and discuss his relationship with his mother during the dozen years of her dementia as a vehicle for exploring some fundamental ethical questions and concerns that emerged from their experience.
As he writes, "These years were difficult in many ways, for her and for me. At the same time, they were also marked by an intimacy, an intensity, and, at times, a beauty that was unprecedented in our lives. By sharing some important aspects of our time together, along with some of the scholarly work that inspired me, I hope to shed new light on both the challenges and opportunities inherent in situations like our own and some salient, but under-recognized, features of the human condition."
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the experience of dementia, in relation to both the afflicted persons and the persons who care for them
- Apply a deepened and enlarged understanding of dementia, aging, and dying when engaging with such persons
Timeline and Requirements:
The course will take place on Thursday, May 13, 2021. This lecture is presenter-led and is a fully online experience. This will be conducted synchronously online via Zoom from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm (EST).

As a co-sponsor of this program, University Counseling Services of Boston College maintains responsibility for this program and its content." The Lynch School of Education and Human Development is providing sponsorship for CEUs for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC). Participants will be eligible to receive 1 CE unit. These credits are accepted by the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (Category I contact hours in Content Area I).
The Boston College School of Social Work is providing CEUs for Licensed Social Workers. This program has been approved for 1.0 CEU Social Work Continuing Education hours for relicensure, in accordance with 258 CMR. Collaborative of NASW and the Boston College School of Social Work Authorization Number A015.21.
Participants must attend the lecture in full and complete the post event survey to be eligible to receive CEs. Please note, watching the recording is not a valid form of attendance.
