Workshop Description:

As you prepare for the upcoming school year, you may be thinking about how to evolve and improve the teaching of writing in your classroom, school, or school district. This workshop will provide you with an overview of a genre-based pedagogy informed by the theory of systemic functional linguistics that is often referred to as “SFL Writing.” Participants will discover the demands of the various genres in elementary and middle school, learn how the emphasis on language development distinguishes this approach from others currently used in schools, and explore ways that the practice can be implemented school-wide. Additionally, participants will be informed of more in-depth learning opportunities for teaching writing with the genre-based approach.

This workshop draws upon field based research in multiple elementary and K–8 schools for over 10 years. It is informed by the theory of systemic functional linguistics and implemented with the pedagogical practice of the teaching and learning cycle, a strong scaffolding at the onset of the learning process which has been modified and adapted over time with the input of real teachers in classrooms in and around Boston.

Learning Outcomes:

After participating in this session, educators will:

  • Understand the demands of genres across grades K - 8 and their connection to content
  • Distinguish this approach from others used in schools due to its emphasis on learning to use language for its function
  • Reflect on how the genre-based pedagogy of writing may be implemented school-wide
  • Identify opportunities for future professional learning for teaching writing to students in your classroom, school and/or school district

Certification of Completion:

Please note that participants will not receive academic credit nor a transcript documenting their participation in this workshop series. However, all participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Workshop Presenters:

Elizabeth MacDonald began her educational career over twenty-five years ago in Boston Public Schools as an elementary teacher and reading specialist. Since then she has taught, coached and developed curriculum grades K-8 in and outside of the district. Liz also serves as an adjunct instructor in Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development. She has worked with Maria Estela Brisk on the study and implementation of the theory Systemic Functional Linguistics in the classroom. Additionally, as co-author of the first and second edition of The Mindful Teacher, Liz is committed to supporting and retaining urban educators. 

Lisa Portadin

Lisa Portadin is currently a Literacy Coach with the Excellence for All Program in the Academics Department of BPS. She began her career teaching high school English and over the course of the last 23 years, has been a middle school teacher, an elementary school teacher, and a school-based coach. Understanding how and why secondary students struggled to read was her impetus for investigating reading in the early grades. Lisa is also a faculty member and teacher candidate supervisor at Northeastern University in the MAT program, where she teaches courses in reading and ESL. Lisa is passionate about shaping and supporting teachers' evolving practice in literacy.
