School-based leaders including principals, assistant principals, department heads, coaches, and teacher leaders.
Workshop Description:
As you prepare to reopen your school, this workshop will provide you with tools and reflective opportunities to integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies with your leadership practices. Socially and Emotionally Competent Leadership (SECL) occurs when leaders prioritize resources to support individual development and capabilities, validate the personal and professional well-being of staff, and create structures that access shared knowledge and enable shared decision making. Ultimately, when SECL leadership practices are implemented, adults will develop skills, vision and actions will align, and shared responsibility will build greater capacity.
This 90-minute workshop on “Socially and Emotionally Competent Leadership” draws upon doctoral research conducted through the Professional School Administrator’s Program at Boston College. Through data collection and analysis, our findings show that school-based leaders, who modeled SEL competencies as outlined by the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) in their practices, positively shape school outcomes including adult collaboration and collective efficacy.
Learning Outcomes:
After participating in this session, educators will:
- Model SEL competencies and skills such as social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making in their leadership practices. Note: Modeling SEL competencies considers an equity lens.
- Utilize multiple assessment tools that enable leaders to reflect upon their work as it relates to a specific team/stakeholder group within their school(s).
- Create and collaborate on an action plan for implementing SECL in your schools through the use of a SECL designed template.
Connection to the PSEL Standards 2015:
- Standard 2E (Ethics & Professional Norms): Lead with interpersonal and communication skill, social-emotional insight, and understanding of all students’ and staff members’ backgrounds and cultures.
- Standard 6G (Professional Capacity of School Personnel): Develop the capacity, opportunities, and support for teacher leadership and leadership from other members of the school community.
- Standard 7E (Professional Community for Teachers & Staff): Develop and support open, productive, caring, and trusting working relationships among leaders, faculty, and staff to promote professional capacity and the improvement of practice.
Certification of Completion:
Please note that all participants from outside Boston College will not receive academic credit nor a transcript documenting their participation in this workshop series. However, all participants will be awarded a certificate of completion to apply to their professional development plans.
Fees & Policies:
Tuition includes all instructional materials. Participants receive a certificate of participation.
