Description:
This Psychological Humanities and Ethics (and Psychology and the Other pre-conference workshop) will introduce some important ideas and language from Martin Heidegger’s magnum opus, Being and Time. This is a philosophical introduction for therapists curious about its relevance for psychotherapy practice.
In this workshop, we will explore Heidegger’s Being and Time as a useful framework -- and perhaps, an essential text for anyone interested in practicing existential psychotherapy. We will cover 1. The historical-philosophical context of the book; 2. A brief summary of the main ideas and language of the book; 3. A more in-depth discussion of a few sections which are particularly relevant for psychotherapy; 4. A discussion of a few existential-psychoanalytic uses of the text, and Eugene Gendlin’s use of the text for his practice of Focusing psychotherapy.
At the conclusion of this presentation the participant will be able to:
- describe basic concepts and language of Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time and place them in a historical/philosophical context.
- explain particularly relevant sections of the book for the theory and practice of psychotherapy
- apply Heidegger’s existential assumptions towards psychotherapy, particularly in light of Gendlin’s focusing and other techniques
Timeline and Requirements:
The course will take place on Friday, July 16, 2021. This workshop is presenter-led and is a fully online experience. This will be conducted synchronously online via Zoom from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (EST).

The Lynch School of Education and Human Development is providing sponsorship for CEUs for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC). Participants will be eligible to receive 3 CEs unit. These credits are accepted by the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (Category I contact hours in Content Area I).
Participants must attend the workshop in full and complete the post event survey to be eligible to receive CEs.
This lecture does not offer CEs for other clinicians not listed above.
